Tram link for better connect between twin cities?

GREATER NOIDA: The city may soon get tram services in the region to ensure last mile connectivity between the townships of Noida and Greater Noida. Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) on Wednesday invited consultants to carry out technical and economical feasibility of the service.

According to officials, expression of interest (EOI) has been summoned from reputed and experienced consultancy firms and other companies. “These companies need to have relevant experience, capability and methodology knowhow in the field of mass transport system planning,” said P C Gupta, CEO, YEIDA. “Applicants may have a JV partner to carry out the feasibility study,” he added.

Companies identified in the pre-qualification meeting of the EOI, will be invited for technical and financial bidding. The last date for submitting applications is December 15, 2014. Once the technical and economic feasibility is worked out, the detailed project report will be designed. “This could take about six months. Once finalized, we will be able to work out the length and cost of the project,” Gupta explained.

According to Gupta, they had studied tramways in European countries and observed their effectiveness. “Having cleared a 20.6-km Metro rail route between Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway earlier this year, a light rail transport system to provide last mile connectivity would be the need of the hour,” he said.

The CEO also said that DMRC has been asked to prepare feasibility for the proposed Metro route. The proposed Metro track is expected to run along the Yamuna Expressway between Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to Sector 22 in the YEIDA area. “Urbanisation of YEIDA has begun. People will start getting possession of their plots by July 2015,” he explained.

“Considering that thousands of people will inhabit the area in the near future, the tram services will prove useful as it will also serve several proposed residential, industrial and IT units along the Yamuna Expressway,” he added.
